This is What I’m Going to Start the Summer Drinking

When I moved out to Oregon in 2005 and was first exposed to the western beer movement, New Belgium was one of the first breweries that made me reconsider American beers.  I used to be a Euro snob.  I’m not sure why.  I felt that the Americanized European swill that was pawned off on us was what beer was supposed to be.  Craft American beers of the west were a revelation to me much as heirloom variety produce and heritage variety meats.  I felt like I had been slapped in the face with reality and I liked it.  I had Fat Tire to thank for a large portion of that.

Now I am older and know how to appreciate some of these more complex tastes.  I must admit when I saw New Belgium’s “Heavy Melon” I was skeptical as hell about a melon lime ale.  It sounded like a corona salesman had just come back from a Gallagher show and I wasn’t sure I wanted to be a part of that trailer park fiesta.  I was wrong.

“Heavy Melon” is a moderately complex and very refreshing ale.  with hints of watermelon and the rind you get the subtle sweet and bitterness that watermelon offers.  Refreshing enough for summer and still offering 5%ABV.  I have to admit I will be tossing back plenty of these while grilling and tossing corn hole in the back yard.
